On Friday with my shovel in hand, I became part of the large group of volunteers to help clean up one of Christchurch's worst affected street in New Brighton. My son came with me and my daughter jumped on one of two buses heading out to Kaiapoi.
As you can see, the amount of liquefaction in this street was phenomenal. Sadly many houses are so badly damaged that they can no longer live in them. The impact on the resident's lives is huge.
I know our contribution was small but every shovel full was one more closer to helping the residents clean up their street. Truckloads of silt were taken out of the street.
Sam Johnson from Canterbury University and his team of volunteers have done a fantastic job of organising the distribution of volunteers around the city. Thank you to you all.
The only failure I had that day was the muffins I baked. They ended up being baked for 1hr & 20 mins. Muffins do not like being baked that long and came out looking like black mini discuses. Moral of the story: Don't leave your son in charge of oven timer when he doesn't know how to use it! All is fine though. He got to clean the pans afterwards.

I think it is great that so many people have volunteered to help other people in the community. Also how other families are opening there homes to people badly affected by the earthquake. Everyone truly appreciates all the help from the community.
